The Great Tree Hunt Competition
From BeyondVoting
NYC's Queens Community Board 3 opened a website to encourage public engagement in the governance process. When participation was less than expected, a marketing plan was developed to promote awareness and engage the public.
Recognizing that, except for a few, governance is a necessity not a primary interest, they sought innovative ways to attract users. With games a growing part of peoples lives, a 'games for governance' program was included in the plan. The Great Tree Hunt Competition is its first effort. For an alpha view see here.
Aimed primarily at area youth, The Great Tree Hunt Competition offers several advantages:
- promote awareness of the Community Board's existence;
- define community district boundaries in residents’ minds;
- promote awareness of the Board's role with issues such as trees and parks;
- draw residents (especially youth) to the Board’s website;
- help develop a map of the district’s tree resources; and
- provide fun for participants and the entire community.
It is hoped that the Fall of 2005 will see the first Competition. But a key technology limitation might require a postponement: The Competition still needs an input device - a gadget with GPS, camera, and email features. (The Rosum TV Measurement Module for GIS might provide the answer. Needs reseach.)
Once it arrives it's "Let the Games Begin."
