Pedestrian Privacy Act

The Pedestrian Privacy Act of 2008 sought to limit the tracking that became common in New York City with the installation of seemingly everpresent police and private security cameras.

The Surveillance Camera Players played an early role in making the public aware of the increasing number of security cameras on New York City's streets. The Privacy Act was inspired by SCA and web applications like Applied Autonomy's Paths of Least Surveillance, which made clear that American's traditional exepectation of privacy in public areas was fast disappearing.

BACKGROUND: It's been said that residents are willing to sacrifice some of their privacy, with two caveats.

  • They get something for it.
  • They understand what, exactly, they've given up.

If you take the data and do something else with it, you violated one of the rules. If you take their data and don't give them anything for it, but just use it to enhance your own profitability, they don't care for that either.
